Celebrate the good times

I created this layout yesterday while husband took a quick spin on his motorcycle. It came together really easily – and I didn’t spend more than (at most) and hour and a half from start to finish, and that includes snapping the photos and editing them!

The photos are from earlier this month when my mom turned 66. She was born on March 8th, 1946, and the date is fitting. As you probably know, March 8th is the International Women’s Day and my mom is a big feminist!

For this layout I used Elle’s Studio’s new papers, one from the line called You and Me and one from Day to Day. I also added a a piece from a Sodalicious paper and a bit of Studio Calico. Beneath it all is a few strips of black and white arrow washi tape (not sure where I got it). The balloons are stamps from Mama Elephant - a brand that was new to me a little over a month ago (but they are soooo cute!).

side 397 - celebrate

When creating this, I did something I normally don’t – mist splatters! I do like the effect though!

side 397 - celebrate d01I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut the title from plain black, textured cardstock and used some very old Cosmo Cricket stickers for the subtitle. I love the transparent background of those – makes them very versatile!

side 397 - celebrate d02

I used the app called Camera+ to take the photos and edit them slightly. You might have seen them before if you follow me on Instagram. I usually take the photos in Camera+ and I do have a weak spot for the filter called ‘Ansel’. Afterwards I often run them through PicFX and use the filter called PFX 10 – it creates a really awesome effect on black and white photos; almost makes it look like a matte print. You can see what I mean here.

Best wishes for a happy Thursday!

Daisy Devotion

The designers over at Cocoa Daisy has started this wonderful tradition of highlighting their members every once in a while, and fittingly enough, they can it Daisy Devotion. I came home from work today to find me as the subject (or should that be object?) this time around.

That made me realize that I have not even shared one of the layouts that was shared on their blog a couple of weeks ago. Oops!

014

I love this photo of my mom from when she was little. I don’t know the precise year, but judging from her size, it must have been in 1950 or 1951? I love how she’s walking away from the camera, the way she carries her purse and her general attitude. It reminds me of this old Norwegian song En liten pike i lave sko (A little girl in low shoes).

(When I did my Bachelor course on gender studies, I used this photo and the song for my oral presentation! I used my family’s history to show the evolution of Norwegian gender roles.)

side 387 - en liten pike i lave sko

For this layout, I really want to use many layers.

side 387 - en liten pike i lave sko d02

I used washi tape beneath the different patterned papers to create even more dimension, in addition to curling, sanding and ripping the edges of the paper.

side 387 - en liten pike i lave sko d01I also journaled straight onto the photo as I didn’t know where to put my journaling. The effect if great, if you ask me!

Thanks for visiting today!

Simple Scrapper March blog hop

bloghop-2013Welcome to Simple Scrapper’s* March blog hop!

This month I’ve got two layouts to show you: The one I made using one of the new sketches from Simple Scrapper’s March collection and the one I made using March’s Story Starter prompts. Let me show you!

I knew I wanted to make a layout using a “behind the scenes”-photo from a few weeks ago. My niece is a competition show jumper and it’s been so much fun taking her photos and cheering her on on the weekends. But what about the rest of the family? Her mom, my sister, is so busy getting both her and the horse ready. And her father drives them everywhere, holds the horse, etc, etc. My mom comes too, she encourages and shows support in good times and in bad. They’re often left out of the photos and therefore also my layouts.

I started with this photo:

side 390 - hele familien i arbeid (simple scrapper) photo

After editing it (no cropping, just turning it into b/w), I picked out the papers I wanted to use. I’ve always loved October Afternoon, especially their double-sided papers with big illustrations on the B-side (like old school books), but they are so hard to use! I always end up putting them aside, thinking I’ll save them for something special. But this time I actually chose the B-side, knowing I’d have to cover much of it up.

side 390 - hele familien i arbeid (simple scrapper)I used many patterned papers and also a doily to build the layers on this, also adding a strip of paper on the bottom and some tape to the journaling spots.

side 390 - hele familien i arbeid (simple scrapper) d03

side 390 - hele familien i arbeid (simple scrapper) d02Using different alphas helps create a focus on the titlework.

side 390 - hele familien i arbeid (simple scrapper) d01When layering like it, I only use adhesive on the center backs, not around every edge. That way the layers are “lifted” off the page, creating even more dimension.

I used March’s Single 1-sketch for this. For the next layout I used March’s Story Starter #10. I built the page around November 2012′s sketch Single 3 and kept very true to it.

side 391 - the world at my feet (Simple Scrapper)

I used a simple dotted patterned paper for the background paper. I knew I had to use dots or lines in order to align the very detailed world map die-cut. Of course, I wasn’t accurate enough with the Kelly Purkey geotag stamp and therefore it looks like I live in England (but it is supposed to be Norway!).

side 391 - the world at my feel (Simple Scrapper) d03

I used twine for the lines from my location to different photos taken while at airports/on planes to illustrate travel. The title is made up of different alphas, highlighting specific words.

side 391 - the world at my feel (Simple Scrapper) d01

I used country codes around the photos to show which countries I’ve been to. The photos are layered on Marthe Stewart doily tags.

side 391 - the world at my feel (Simple Scrapper) d02I added some Studio Calico wood veneer stars to illustrate the feeling of flying high when on airplanes. I also used Ormolu badges about traveling and wood veneer airplanes and camera. The strips on the bottom of the page are both patterned paper and a May Arts ribbon.

Sketchbook365: March challenge

I made this layout using the March sketch from Sketchbook365.

The photo is of my niece. I took it while she was warming up before a competition a few weeks back, in really bad weather (hail and wind!) This sport definitely takes a lot of dedication!

side 389 - dedication (Scrap365 march sketch)

I used the January kit from Cocoa Daisy. The feathers are made with one of their awesome stamps, embossed using opaque white Zing embossing powders on top of a patterned paper. I layered strips of paper and used the card cut-outs from a Pink Paislee paper to layer the photo.

side 389 - dedication (Scrap365 march sketch) d02These feathers (Studio Calico) were not included in the kit, but came from my stash.. I inked the edge of the speech bubble to give it some extra dimension and adhered it to the page using 3D-foam.

I hope you hop on over to Sketchbook365 to see what the other designers made from the same sketch. And don’t forget to link us up to your own layout. You might just win dies from XCut!

Cocoa Daisy sketch challenge

Hello!

I hope the week is treating everyone good so far! Today I thought I’d show you a layout that I made yesterday. Cocoa Daisy’s February sketch is so cool! I really love Emily’s interpretation of it, and although I like doing my own thing, I kept very close to the original sketch this time.

DSC_4190

You see, my niece is a show jumper and I always go to her competitions to photograph her. Most of the time, the photos are like the one you see above. They’re not terribly good, especially not when she competes indoors. The photo above was shot at ISO6000 due to the poor lighting. It’s hard getting good photos in those conditions.

But then there are the times when it’s possible to get her to stand still for a few seconds at a time, like when they’re preparing the pony for transport. I got some very wonderful photos of that on Sunday…

DSC_4241I really like how the colors turned out. Much is due to the overcast weather we’ve been having; lots of indirect light! I could just print it in colors, but that would mean a tougher choice when picking patterned papers and embellishments. An easy solution is to covert to black/white.

There are many sites out there that offers free Lightroom presets/Photoshop action. I have a set that I really like, but I also make my own presets (a preset is  a one-click edit based on previous edits that you save).

DSC_4291-2I love the look on her face here, so in-tune with the pony. They’ve really got a special bond.

That’s what I wanted to scrapbook! There’s been a few articles in Norway lately, reporting research showing that female leaders often report to have been involved with horses lately. It is believed that the skills such a sport requires prepares the girls for leading positions later in life, having taught them good leadership skills. I don’t doubt this at all!

THIS LAYOUT WAS PICKED UP BY SCRAPBOOK TRENDS. LOOK FOR IT IN THEIR AUGUST 2013 ISSUE!

Out for publication

I kept this page fairly clean’n simple. I matted the photo with 3D foam dots to give it more depth and embossed the arrows on the bottom patterned paper-strip.

I wanted to keep the title bold and dominant, but added small touches to it by using some red alphas in addition to the black ones.

The journaling is about the research I mentioned above and how much I believe this to be true.

If you have not checked out the sketch, I urge you to do so, and also take part in the challenge. Click this link!

Have a good day, everyone!

Simple Scrapper February BLOG HOP

bloghop-2013

Hello!

I’m back with two layouts for this month’s blog hop! Make sure you hop on over to the next person on the list after taking a look at the layouts I created using this month’s awesome sketch collection! Also, remember to use this link to enter a giveaway for a one-month trial subscription to Simple Scrapper*.

The topic for this month’s Story Starter is “Hope and Dreams”. I chose no. 4. Honor your ancestors who worked for the dreams you can realize today. The layout is about my maternal grandmother. That’s her in the photo, with my mom.

Margrethe - February story starter - GRANDMOTHER

She died in 2004, over 90 years old. My mom keeps telling me that I look more and more like her, not only my face and mimicry, but also my style and general appearance.

side 383 - my grandmother (SImple Scrapper) d01

I remember her as a stylish lady, so to be compared to her in an honor.

I also made a layout using one of the new sketches. I chose the sketch with two photos (single 2) and used photos of my niece from just a couple of weeks ago.

Margrethe - Feb single 1 - SMILE

She and a friend were goofing around after a show jumping-competition. It’s so hard getting her to smile at photos, so this was a welcome sight!

I made this layout using Cocoa Daisy’s September kit – love it!

My niece won second place in a regional championship in September and that had to be celebrated. She only started competing this summer, so I’m really proud of her. Of course, I was proud of her before this, as well, but you know that I mean…!

Thank you for visiting this month. I really hope you hop along to the other Simple Scrappers! :)

The Brave & Unafraid

Have you joined in on the new Cocoa Daisy sketch challenge? If not, I urge you to do so. Emily’s sketch is just so perfect. I love her layout too, so much fun with the different fonts in the title!

I took this photo on the same day as the ones  I used on a layout yesterday. It’s been two weeks, but work has kept me so busy I haven’t had a chance, or the energy, to scrap them before now.

Uh’oh. I just noticed that I’m lying… On the journaling card, I’ve stamped Aug 24th, 2012. The photo was taken the day after, on the 25th. I hate it when I make mistakes like that…! ;)

Disbelief?

The title says it all, really.

A week ago, I received an e-mail that literally made my jaw drop. I was offered a permanent position on a DT. A DT that I had not applied for. A DT that didn’t even have an open call.

For me, that is a big deal.

In July I sent off my first few publications. That was a big deal then.

This is a big deal now.

For a week, I’ve had to keep shut about which company it was that made me the offer.

Today I sent off the signed contract and I am at liberty to disclose.

That’s right!

The title of this blog post is also the title on one of the layout I would like to share today. Both layouts were made using a Simple Scrapper Premium Member sketch. The Premium Membership at Simple Scrapper provides skills and shortcuts to help you simplify and find more meaning in your memory keeping.

The layouts were made for Simple Scrapper’s September Challenge: Use a map.

On this I only used Cocoa Daisy‘s gorgeous world map stamp, a sticker-strip and the sticker letter. I love white space!

The photos are of my niece, after she had survived the level A, 90 cm, course – and won 2nd place! She was so happy!

Thank you so much for visiting today, and I hope to see you again soon!

Be You.

I haven’t settled into my scraproom just yet. Yes, I scrap. Yes, I use my stuff, but there’s a whole closet full of boxes and boxes lining the wall where I intend to put an Expedit.

So when I found an unopened Cocoa Daisy box, I was intrigued. Turns out it’s May’s kit: Graffiti Bridge. And I friggin’ LOVE IT!

So I sat down and scrapped…!

This is based on a page sketch by Simple Scrapper*. If you’re a member, you won’t find it yet, but it will be released as a freebie once the assignment is due and goes live.

I LOVE the Francy Pants Design’s SUBWAY ART paper. I’m considering getting more of this. I used some of the paper and was inspired by what I didn’t use for the jouraling on the right hand side.

The photos is of my 12 year old niece, Instagrammed by my sister. She’s such a cool kid and I want her to stay true to herself and who she is.

The “Right now”-arrow is from Scarlet Bird Designs‘ “Memories” die-cut set. The chevron badge you see on the full-layout photo is from Paper Play.

Thank you for visiting and have a great Thursday evening!
